ACTION B.1 – (April 2020 – September 2021)
NH₃ , CH₄, PM and VOCs abatement performance in pig barns
Comparison between results obtained with air treatment technologies and control rooms will be carried out to evaluate effectiveness of pollutants reduction. This action is necessary to define a comprehensive approach to the techniques and to propose to farmers innovative, suitable and easy-to-implement solutions able to reduce NH₃, GHG, PM and VOCs emissions from pig farms. This action has three sub-actions, one for each technology tested.
B1.1 – Performance of the wet scrubber system for abatement of NH₃, GHG, PM and VOCs in pig barns
The wet scrubber prototype will be installed in one farm in Italy and in one in Spain and then switched to the other two farms. The applicability and efficiency of the wet scrubber will be tested to evaluate indoor air quality improvement.
B1.2 – Performance of the dry scrubber system for abatement of NH₃, GHG, PM and VOCs in pig barns
A dry scrubber will be installed in the same farms but in a different room. The efficiency at a full scale will be evaluated.
B1.3 – Validation of the online tool for monitoring NH₃, PM, GHG and environmental parameters
The microclimatic tool will be validated. Data collected will be compared to the Gold Standard. During the monitoring period of the Gold Standard: i) NH₃ and GHG concentration will be measured with Brüel & Kjaer instrument; ii) PM with PM analyzer and ion chromatography; iii) odors by olfactometric measurements and GC-MS. The Gold Standard will allow validating the reliability of Nuvap microclimatic tool. Analysis of collected data will be also useful to implement animals and worker health, other than promote pig performance.
ACTION B.2 – (April 2020 – March 2021)
Optimization of the performance of the dry and wet scrubber systems through the Nuvap tool implemented with an Artificial Intelligence
The aim is to implement the Nuvap tool with AI so that it will activate the wet and the dry scrubber when defined thresholds are exceeded. In this way also the energy consumption associated to the working of the scrubbers will be reduced. This aim will be realized thanks to:
- The development of an electronic board that will be added to the Nuvap tool. The amount of data monitored and collected will allow the creation of a database with information of NH₃, GHG, PM and VOCs emissions. This database will allow the Nuvap tool to automatically activate the functioning of the two abatement systems.
- Customization of the App used by the farmers to control the air quality in their farms. The new version will control the functioning and working time of the abatement systems.
- Estimation of environmental benefits obtained by the use of the Nuvap tool implemented with AI.
During the Gold Standard the stakeholders will be involved to define threshold for the Nuvap tool with AI. The AI will allow to guarantee the correct management of the microclimate thus mitigating also the emissions.
ACTION B.3 – (October 2021 – September 2022)
Replicability and transferability
The aim of this action is the replication of the know-how and experience acquired in the demonstrative fields. Rota Guido will prepare a market plan oriented to all customers operating in its operating seats. In this way it will encourage its customers to buy and replicate the installation of the wet scrubber with the Nuvap AI tool. The market exploitation will be carried out with the help of Nuvap company. It is necessary to fully understand pollution problems and create new job opportunities. Basically, Rota Guido will develop the replicability and transferability plan through the following task, business plan, market strategy and levels of sales expected in 5 years after the project.
